Chapter 19

After my shower, I lotioned my body with some of my son’s Johnson & Johnson baby lotion. I was trying to think up a few jokes to tell Bookem as I slid into a pair of Guess jeans and a fresh pair of Guess tennis shoes to match. I twisted my hair back, then pulled the length up into a butterfly clip. Trying not to let thoughts of Cetron invade my mind, I said one of the jokes out loud to see how it would sound. “Why doesn’t Mexico have an Olympic team?” I paused a few seconds and glossed my lips. “Because all the Mexicans who can run, jump or swim are already in the United States.” Giggling to myself, I grabbed my Coach purse and trotted down the stairs. Before I reached the last step, the phone rang.

“Speak.” I chirped into the phone blithely. Silence. “Hellooo…” Still no response.

It only took two seconds for me to figure out that some silly ass broad was playing on my phone again. Probably one of Cetron’s tricks.

“You should have called your mamma. She’s in my back yard getting pumped by my pit bull,” I yelled into the phone, laughing. “Ha, ha.”

See I was trying to start my day off right and whoever was on the other end of the phone was trying to ruin it. “If this is Cocoa or Meka…Cetron said ya’ll stank ass need to be at the clinic.” I slammed the phone down. Click! Somebody was going to answer to an ass whuppin’ when I found out who it was that kept calling and playing on my phone. I listened to the phone ring repeatedly as I locked the door and hopped in our classic Chevelle 1970 Malibu that was painted burgundy with the thick white stripes covering the hood.

Walking into Grady Memorial Hospital gave me the creeps. I stopped by the gift shop to buy Bookem a card, some chocolate, and colorful balloons.

“Please hold the door.” I said loud enough for people to turn and stare, as I hurried to enter the elevator.

“Be careful beautiful,” said a deep raspy voice.

“What floor?”

I answered, “Six.” I held the balloons up higher, away from my face so that I could get a visual of Mr. Mystery Man.

The smile that radiated between dimpled cheeks, smooth chocolate skin, and neatly trimmed goatee caused my perfectly arched brows to raise a notch. I was in the right place because looking at this handsome creation before me had me feeling like I’d died and gone to heaven.

I cleared my throat before speaking. “Umm…Thank you for holding the door.” My words came stumbling out as if I was speaking a foreign language.

“Not a problem at all. I’m going to the same floor,” he answered. “My wife is sick.”

Although Cetron and I weren’t legally married, I loved him and his family enough to consider them my in-laws. Maybe one day Cetron would get his mind right, stash enough cash to get out of the street
